In order to install from netinstall, I had to disable secure boot. After
that, the netinst stick could be selected from the boot menu.
Both graphical and text installation left me with a black screen right
after GRUB; judging by the response to SysRq

This is an installation report on an HP ProBook 440 G5, type number
3KX82ES#ABD.
It appears that the 3KX82ES number is what defines the hardware relevant
to this report; other ProBook 440 G5 appear to use different (Intel)
WiFi adapters. (And don't

it is indeed a different chip.

for sake of completeness, the machine everything so far was tested on
used to run bios version 1.05.

i just applied the bios update 2.07[1], which can be installed using a
bootable cd.
as a result, suspend to ram now works reproducibly (tried about 10x so
far, with error rate being about 60% before, i assume the problem is
gone), and the non-free wifi driver (wl) also keeps working through
suspen
another update after some further tests:
* the suspend problem persists at least from kernel version 3.2 through
to 3.8. an ubuntuforums report[1] claims that it suspend worked in
ubuntu 12.04 but not in 12.10, the former using kernel 3.2, the latter
3.5.

* suspend:
suspend-to-ram never worked before on this system -- i forgot to
mention that in the original report. a kernel upgrade to
experimental's linux-image-3.7-trunk-amd64 3.7.1-1~experimental.2
version made suspend-to-ram just work.
* wifi:
i found out more about the original wifi
as of today, wifi just works at what seems to be full strength. i can't
possibly pin it down to the individual updates i've done, or when since
the report was filed it started working. some packages were installed
from experimental (most prominently libdrm2 and libdrm-radeon1; apart
from that, only
the wifi issue was not rfkill related; rather, the wifi just has very
low signal strength, looks like a powersaving mode that's active even
though it shouldn't. i haven't found out more yet, i'll keep this bug
report updated.
a thing i forgot to mention: not only asks the installer for the wifi
