it is indeed a different chip. the free driver for the broadcom chips claims not to support it at all[1], the nonfree one does, but not in the version inside debian. instead, bcmwl-kernel-source (6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu6) is required (can be installed from [2] and just works with dkms). ubuntu has a package for it[2]; i don't quite see how this is connected to debian's broadcom-sta package, but it seems to me that they keep their own separate package, and ours only got pulled in there too[3]. a debian bug already requests pulling from there (bug #688823).
