An update on my installation story:
The system is running. But I encountered 2 other issues.
1) Just after pre-configuring all the packages and before the
installation started, one of the programs complained that it could not
find /usr/lib/python2.3/compileall.py. Lucky enough I still had a cop
f /var
is on a too-small root.
Fabulous tool! I am sure this installation set will make debian/gnu a winner!

helpful as i can get on with configuring the box whilst packages are still

it i have the second edition 98
.4 kernel series. So make your own
set of boot disks with 2.4 and compile in support for the controller.
Woody will ship with 2.2 and 2.4 bootdisks if i remember right.

should not cause problems in the case of syslinux. By definition, syslinux
only needs to boot from a floppy, and there are few, if any, occassions to
boot from any but the first floppy.
I haven't looked at the ldlinux.asm code in depth and don't have a patch.

If you want to learn Debian you may want to start with the stable
distribution :) AFAICT, the new install system won't be ready for
a while yet.
Do you already have a stable ( aka Potato ) system installed?
You could test the new system in a chroot environment, if you
have some d

I do, so I can have Potato with CONFIG_SERIAL_CONSOLE as
well as ReiserFS support.
Hopefully someday I will not need to deviate from the stable

The kernel does not have to be on /
A common use for the boot partion was to get
around the ( now fixed ) 1024 cylinder limit in
lilo; IMHO it's not useful to have as a seperate
partition now that lilo's limit has been raised
considerably.
