I just ran into this issue, using PXE netboot.
A quick workaround, which seems to work correctly for me now is to just
copy the vmlinuz-3.16.0-4-amd64 from 3.16.7-ckt7-1 over the linux kernel
file on my tftp server.
FWIW, might help someone.

port #272139 (I swapped the ! and . in the patch as suggested).
Then I recreated /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8-1-686 and rebooted the machine.
No more Kernel Panics now... :)
