Package: installation-reports
Hi Folks,
Although I did many Debian installs, here's my first install report. I re-installed one of the 'servers' (in fact they're desktop models) we use at our college/professional school (THRijswijk, The Netherlands). This one is a P IV Compaq which I configured as CGI/Webserver with CGIWrap and CVS server. It's gonna be used by students during the courses.
INSTALL REPORT
Debian-installer-version: pre-rc2 from http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/sid_d-i/i386/pre-rc2/sarge-i386-businesscard.iso
uname -a: Linux tom 2.6.8-1-686 #1 Thu Oct 7 03:15:25 EDT 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
Date: 27 oct 2004 Method: How did you install?
I inserted the CDROM, started the machine, booted from CD and started the Sargification by entering expert26 mode. After answering a few questions I selected remote network console to be loaded and continued the installation remote (at my desk) via SSH. (Very good feature!!! I like this!) In earlier versions of the Installer, the SSH console wouldn't work.
Machine: Compaq Evo300 desktop model, Like this one: http://www.eksystems.cz/images/evod300ad500.jpg Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz Memory: 512MB
Root Device: Promise TX2 with 2x 40GB MAXTOR 6L040J2, ATA DISK drive Notes: There's a Promise RAID controller present, and earlier this week I tried to get it working (RAID1 Mirror) after installing Debian (to just 1 drive of the array I wanted to create), instead of immediately throwing the promise card out of the window because it sucks. The previous Linux installation on this machine was RH9.0 with the promise ft.o kernel module. I discovered it wasn't going to work easily using the firmware RAID controller, so I decided switching to Linux software RAID instead to keep the control myself, while keeping the disks connected to the Promise card. (hde & hdg)
After a succesful manual setup of software RAID with mdadm I compiled a kernel with RAID1 support inside, but I was left with an unbootable system, and Grub wouldn't show it's menu any more (Error 15). I remembered the software RAID option from the Debian Installer, and I had a backup of the /etc and /home, so I just reinstalled the whole thing, setting up software RAID while re-partitioning the disks during the installation, instead of figuring out everything and rescueing my current system.
And voila.... Thats's peace of cake!! Incredible! In no more than 80 minutes I had a full working system with all applications, configuration and user data reinstalled from scratch. Debain w00ts!
Note: When deleting all RAID stuff from the Promise configuration utility (Ctrl-F), the controller refused to boot from any of the attached disks. I needed to define some Bootable Mirror-array in the Promise BIOS-configuration utility, although I won't use the Promise-card RAID functionality...
Root Size/partition table: Feel free to paste the full partition table, with notes on which partitions are mounted where.
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/md0 499820 101792 398028 21% / tmpfs 258184 0 258184 0% /dev/shm /dev/md4 19999512 37824 19961688 1% /home /dev/md3 249844 32840 217004 14% /tmp /dev/md2 1999676 241096 1758580 13% /usr /dev/md1 499820 89532 410288 18% /var
So there's 16GB of free space left on each drive, but that's ok. Eventually I can partition that when it's needed.
