That depends on your point of view. For new Linux users, it is
really, _really_, bad. For more experienced Linux users, it is very
flexible and powerful, but not easy, convenient and fast.

Hello,
Well with any ataraid that uses /dev/ataraid the controller is
/dev/ataraid/dN where N is a number. The partitions are
/dev/ataraid/dNpX where X is also a number.
I.e. first channel first partition is d0p1

So to get woody to install I'm going to have to patch the kernel? Is this a

just the bf2.4 boot-floppies?
Would creating the boot-floppies myself using 3.0.22 or higher help? (i.e.

Thx. Clear case, the kernel does not list any ataraid partitions.
Whatever the reason is - when Slackware's kernel does work, they must
have patched it.

Hm, did you look in that directory first? Or in the kernel-docs? d0 is
equivalent to "hda o
How did you name the hardrive when you used fdisk? I've tried using fdisk on

Hello,
I had this exact same problem under woody with a hardware promise card.
My solution was to switch to the alt console (alt-f2) and manually
partition the disk and create the filesystem. Once this is done and you
rerun the install scripts it will see the partition correctly.

It shouldn't make any real difference where you run from. You might

It' a Promise PDC20267 onboard ide raid (on a Tyan 200) and is setup as RAID
1 with 2 x 40Gb IDE HDs.
The installer fails as it cannot find the harddrive(s) when trying to
partition / initialise, so the installation process cannot proceed.
As far as I am aware the slackware 8.1 kernel is a stand
