At the end of the installation process, a new "custom boot floppy" is
made that mounts the newly-installed root filesystem. This disk is
first formatted (apparently by superformat) with interleave 1.

I also downloaded disk images from
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/compact/
Same result with both sets

No, it's a Mac formated hard disk (in fact, I use
[udhcpc in boot floppies]

I use udhcpc on some machines here, because it is the only
client which will allow me to have eth0 statically configured
and eth0:0 configure
