Unable to install from hard disk or mounted partition

I tried the new-powermac flavor from Jan 7 posted in ~walters. I was unable to install from the hard disk. I first tried the images-1.44/root.bin posted with new-powermac. Then I tried a root.bin I had built from cvs on 1/14. Both gave the same symptoms. I don't believe there have been any change
