Yes. Essentially you will be overwriting all stock software functionality with
Debian.
If Apache is your goal then fine. If you expect any increased performance
you'll be greatly disappointed.

Having a NAS with 4x SATA 3G drives and two 1GB NICs bottlenecked at 5MB/second
is a bad joke from Intel.

Hi all -
Thanks to the work of many on this mailing list, I've been able to install SID
(w/ kernel 2.6.32-5) on my SS4000-E NAS.
Much to my surprise, the performance of the unit is pretty much identical to
how it was running the proprietary Falconstor implementation.
hdparm -tT /dev/sd
I'm not sure if the limitation was hardware based (not sure how it would be) or
not, but documentation has always stated the unit was designed for 2TB only

Marc,
Did you find and follow that PDF's instructions on loading the image?
The original PDF was in an Asian language and translated.
That's what I plan on going by... Wondering if that bricked the unit.

Redboot gives a 1 second prompt through ttys0 before booting the image.
From everything that I have read, getting an active serial connection
is pretty much step 1.

Hello all -
I've seen quite a bit of activity about the SS4000-E serial console, and I was
wondering if others have had difficulty?
I went out and purchased two 9pin F/F null modem cables. I also purchased two
(seemingly different anyway) IDC 10 -> DB9 serial bracket cables.
