Now that I'm switching to the MinTTY terminal, which supports
Unicode/UTF-8, I need a Vim compiled against ncursesw (*with*
wide characters) if my assessment of the situation is correct.

Is that `prepare' script a standard step in autoconf? Or is it a
custom feature of either Mutt or Cygwin or something else?

the ssh command
Sounds like you want to explore what options ~/.ssh/config has:
Host s22
HostName server-22.bla.rz
User superadmin
Then type:
ssh s22
Same mechanism available for PuTTY.
