Hi Kurt, Not everyone is using a tri-colour at the masthead but it is practical in that, when sailing, there is nothing to obscure the lower lights and one lamp can draw a lot less power than three or four lamps. Note, if you are motoring then you still need the forward steaming light, etc.

Exactly right Dennis. And if motoring, burning three or four lamps is usually not a problem. Hence the desire to go LED for a masthead tri-light and the practicality of keeping lower lights as incandescent. You might be astonished at the number of our American cousins who race around here
