Speaking of preventers and jibing, I am wondering what is the recommended way to correctly jibe a 30-40’ boat in decent winds? How far do you sheet in the main before/during jibing? Anything else to decrease the shock to the traveller in strong winds? As to the preventer, do you simply releas

Martin, The Yanmar shop manual says that the KM2-A gearbox for the 2GM was available with 2.21, 2.62 or 3.22 ratios. You would think that after "X"ing out the 2.62 they would have stamped the correct 2.21 ratio on the plate. Rick Taillieu Nemesis '75 C&C 25 #371 Shearwater Yacht Club Halifax, NS

When it's really windy, it depends.. If I'm just out cruising with the family most of the time we just do what I call a "Chicken jibe": Do a regular in the wind tack but go 270 degrees. No fuss, no muss no matter how hard it's blowin' not pretty but not scary either. If I'm racing or feel like

With winds over 15 kts I try to helm a bit off the lee and have the main trimmer center the boom. When the end is about 18" off centerline I do the initial gybe fairly fast to swing the boom to 18" on the other side. The mainsheet is then eased out to the correct position once I have settled in on

I have some concerns with what has been said. If it is blowing 10-15 and you are wing on wing by the lee, if you slowly pull the main into the center, you would have to head up to prevent premature gybe. This will kill the wing on wing as well as the main efficiency and both are going to slow th

I guess ymmv. I don't say to slow down (not that it matters that much in a keel boat; the chances are small that you will be going much faster than 6-8 kt, depending on your LOA), only to turn slowly. I do the complete manoeuvre by first getting close to running, switch the jib to wing on wing
