Just to add a little more to this discussion, there is no part of the
transmission that is under enough pressure to create a "spray". There is a
vent in the dipstick and the transmission fluid simply moves around by gravity
and the motion of the gears, etc.
Also, it will cost about $750 to have the transmission removed and replaced.
One you have it taken apart to replace seals, it's a small increase to change
the clutch plates too. You wouldn't want to go thru a seal replacement without
replacing the clutch plates too--it just doesn't make sense!
However, I would spend more time & make sure that the leak is coming from one
of the seal areas. If you look on my blog, I used a small camera and took pics
under the transmission to locate the leaks.
By the way, this was my second transmission rebuild in the 31-year life of my
boat.
