we use robocup holders and are very happy with them.  they are a heavy spring loaded clamp on style and can clamp on a stanchion, or the binnacle guard, or any other verticle 1-1/2 inch or less. They never fall off accidentally and we remove them after every sail.  Kind of like the instrument c
