Thanks, Jim. I'll let you know when I'm back in the water. It's a fine idea:)

Good day to be rich. I just bounced my boat off a shoal near here and trashed
the rudder. But I'm merely Rich:(

My final 2 cents... (unless I keep thiinking) Really, I think a Class A
receiver is a good thing. I think a good radar system is more
important. Outside of highly tamed areas of the world AIS is pretty
much optional even for huge fishing vessels.

Personally, I think Class B transponders are a waste of money.
Many folks who have Class B transponders are so proud of them that they
leave them on all the time, thus flooding the channel with worthless
traffic. The boat is sitting at the dock, broadcasting "Under Way"
while the owner is sit

I like my AIS capable VHF. Linked to my chart plotter. I can see them but,
unfortunately, they can't see me.
I suspect that soon (if not already) you will be able to buy a VHF with both
AIS and GPS.

The boat I bought this spring came with a year old Standard Horizon GX2150 VHF radio with AIS that is connected to the Lowrance GPS at the helm station. I can see AIS signals on a tiny screen on the radio and on the GPS map. DaveOn Sep 28, 2013, at 7:03 AM, Steve Thomas wro

I installed a West Marine AIS-1000 on our C&C 44 in summer 2011 in
preparation for our year long trip down the US east coast to the Caribbean
and back.
At the time the West Marine unit was significantly less expensive than
other units, in some case less than half the price.
It has worked flawlessly
My Si-Tek unit is a transponder.

Just *FYI*, a transponder transmits AIS info as well as receives. You all have

What other electronics have you got on the boat, specifically chartplotter/MFD?
They'll all talk to each other in some way, but if your MFD supports NMEA2000,
for instance, you'd be better going that route for the AIS transponder, in my
opinion.
I just sold a nice all-Raymarine setup to Lloyd
