Hi Shawn,
I used OpenCPN and Nobeltec quite a fews ago on the West Coast cruise.
Main charts were NDI (digital ocean) and Nobeltec vr4. I did say old.
I also had C-map 93, more for entertainment and back-up. Ran them on
two XP machines, a Dell & ThinkPad.
There is an OpenCPN chart download h

The older less expensive iPads did not have gps. My friend has one and bought a
plug in gps for it. You can now get inexpensive WiFi enabled gps or GNSS pucks
that can interface to the iPad by WiFi or Bluetooth. These are very nice
because you can place them where satellite reception is optimal

Hello all,
I am going to mildly disagree with the statements about tablets having to be
cellular capable. I have an old (2014) Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet that is wifi
only, and it has GPS capability that I have used on my boat.
So while that statement might be right for other makes and models, i

As has been pointed out before, you do not need to actually activate the
cellular service on the tablet, it just needs to be cellular capable. That’s
because the cellular capable units have an internal GPS, which the WiFi only
units do no

Hi,
I just saw these advertised locally:

It appears he is loading OpenCPS on a variety of ruggedized laptops. No
experience or association with this company, but thought it looked
interesting and pricing is pretty good.

We use an old 32 GB iPad2 (2011 or 2012) running iOS 9.3.5. It has no internal
GPS or cellular.
Installed iNavX and connect via bluetooth to an external GPS (DUAL xgps150a).
Load up all the raster charts we need at home via WiFi for free. With all the
charts for New England to Canadian border

I run OpenCPN on an old Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. It runs Android 4.2 or
similar. You don't need much tablet for many of the apps.
It seems to work fine. I rarely fire it up for navigation as I much prefer
dedicated marine GPS systems.
I would consider a used Garmin GPSMap 64, 76 or similar handhe

No. You don’t need to activate the cell plan. The GPS antenna is shared with
the cell antenna in the iPad.

areas that you sail in. I'm on the Chesapeake Bay (Eastern Shore) and AT&T
