Its done!! My rudder post was not threaded, so I ran a line under the rudder. As Jake predicted, the rudder barely moved. Had to buy a pipe wrench to loosen the ring. The bearing was not in bad shape, but I feel better having the new one in place. The bonus was that it was much easier to tight

Joel, A shim under the quadrant would be the best way to hold the rudder in place. Depending on how close your rudder quadrant is to the rudder tube, it may not drop much. I know access back there is horrible, but it is the best way to go. Running a line under the rudder would be my secon

When I recently dropped my rudder I found the retaining ring needed serious encouragement to come off, had to put a pipe wrench to it. The strap wrench did not do it at all. Hope yours is more free than that. Apply lubrication liberally! Graham Collins Secret Plans C&C 35-III #11 On 2014-10-

Hi Joel, Check the top of your rudder post. The top of mine has a threaded 1/2 hole, so I screwed in a bolt with a ring on the top of it (about $2 from home dépôt) and tied a line from that to the backstay. It was a lot easier than running a line under the rudder. Mike Atacama 33 Mk ii Sen
