I doubt that ANY grounding technique would be able to ensure that the
instantaneous power from a lightning strike as so well illustrated in the video
could be ‘directed’ anywhere other than where it was going to go anyway!

precautions to minimize the chances of serious damage from a strike IMHO

I don't think it is possible to reduce these chances to zero, no matter what
precautions you take--a strike contains so much energy/second that i
Chuck,
I think you have a solid connection to ground. I wouldn’t worry about a thing.
If lightning hits and goes down the mast to the keel, you’re still having a
pretty bad day.

I think you're close, but I'd make sure of the connection between mast and keel
bolt. The mast is key for conductance (aluminium is a much better conductor
than stainless steel). ABYC would require a 4AWG primary conductor for
lightning protection; a short strap from the mast to keel bolt would
My keel has no fiberglass on it at all – it is painted lead.
I have a 4 gauge cable from my mast to a keel bolt for grounding.

With the talk of GPS etc storage in ovens, it got me thinking about lightning
strikes in general. My 27 Mk5 has some fat welding cables bonding the shroud
chain plates on each side to the largest of my keel bolts. I hope this is
adequate protection but of course all lightning protection is purel
You have a point, so to speak.
