Thank you all for your suggestions. I have decided to replace my
wire-to-rope halyard with 3/8 Samson MLX (doublebraid cover over Dyneema
core). Now my only question is whether to strip to the core for the "wire
section" of the new halyard. For me, there is still the sheave question.

Thanks, Josh, but I'm 95% sure the sheave on my 1980 LF38 is only for wire.
My telephoto shot of the wire in the sheave shows the total sheave width at
the lip is slightly less than twice the width of the 3/16 wire passing
through it, so I'm pretty sure a 7/16 rope in that space would either jam

Hi, experts!
It's time to replace my main halyard on my LF38. The original is
wire-to-rope, and I plan to replace with the same (3/16 7X19 wire, 7/16
doublebraid). I have noted that the halyard sheave at the masthead is quite
small and narrow - for wire only - meaning the halyard could jam if the

Adrian,
I have a 1980 LF 38 whose holding tank is still good (knock on wood), but
another one in my boat yard failed a few years ago and that owner told me
he replaced it without too much trouble with a Ronco B145 tank that he said
fits well in the space. See:

The question about the 37 stemcast casting replacement reminded me about an
issue on my 1980 Landfall 38 that has nagged at me (or terrified me,
depending on my mood). My casting has some possibly serious cracks in it,
mostly likely originating in stresses placed by a the mooring line over the

Here's my sad story of a cockpit drain hose freezing 11 years ago, the
first winter in New England after I bought my Landfall 38. I had it
"professionally" shrinkwrapped and asked the wrappers not to go too before
below the toe rail because I'd heard the film could stick to the Awlgrip
hull paint.
