We own Zia, a 1975 30MK1. We keep the boat at home in Mayo Maryland and
race the Wednesday night series at Pirates Cove Yacht Club on the West
River. Stiff as a church, nimble and fast.

Hi Ryan,
Do you have a split backstay? That will force a hole or a slit in the
bimini to make it work. I can't tell from your pic - nice looking boat by
the way. I also have a 30MK1 and am looking for a good bimini solution that
won't get in the way while racing but provides some protection fr
Hi Randy,
I replaced the old gate valves on my 30-1 this winter. While trying to
unscrew them, I ended up spinning the actual thru-hull so I replaced those
as well. I had a devil of a time finding the replacements since on my boat
#305, they were flush to the hull. I found some flush thru hulls
I received the blessing from the Admiral to equip Zia with a folding prop
this season. I have been looking at our options and the Gori 2 blade geared
prop 11.5 X 8 looks like it would do the job.
Before I pull the trigger on this, I would like to check with the list for
opinions/experiences on b
Thanks so much for all the info Rick.
I have some Groco flushmount thru hulls that will fit the hole but have a
flange diameter that is smaller than the originals (whatever brand they
might be). I also have the Groco ball valves that fit on the thru hulls and
will work fine for the drains. The
I am trying to find the mfg. for the cockpit drain brass thru hulls on my
1975 30 MK1.
They are flush to the bottom of the hull and have a flange diameter of 3.5
inches and a 1.25 inch hole. I have tried Groco and Perko but neither has
the correct size although they both have brass flush mount ve
Howdy Listers,
I am replacing the through hull cockpit drains on my 30 MK1. This project
started with replacing the old gate valves - and it has sort of expanded
(shall we say) from there. Mission creep!
The flange measures 3.5 inches on the outside of the hull with a 1.25
diameter hole. The
My 1975 30-1, Zia is up for a nice Christmas gift this year - a folding
prop.
Any recommendations for a good folder that will still give me decent
performance in forward and reverse? I don't know the current two blade prop
specs but she is being pushed by a smooth running Atomic 4.
Thanks for
Howdy listers,
Last year I had my forestay replaced (for a new roller furler) and it ended
up being longer than the original by maybe about 4 or 5 inches . I have
adjusted the forestay all the way down but I still need plenty of backstay
to keep it all tight. So now my mast rake is about 15 i
Hi Kevin - I had the same problem with the Barient primaries on my 30 MK1.
It would have cost $75 each to have then done at a shop and it would have
taken weeks. So I chose the cheap alternative and it worked like a charm.
I used a sharp nail punch and lightly punched a bunch of indentations in a
Cast my vote for a FORUM - An email list is akin to using smoke signals when
there is a telephone available - it is needlessly cumbersome and difficult
to read with all of the repetitive text.
A forum would allow us to add pics and videos and organization and we would
all get so much more help
Hi Tom - I notice the same thing on my 30-1 - as I increase revs the stern
squats. I have a two blade fixed prop on an Atomic 4. I sometimes adjust
the throttle by looking over the stern rather than the speedo - kinda handy.
At high revs my exhaust is completely underwater while it is a few inche
I don't believe a captains license incurs any extra liability if you are a
passenger on a vessel. If you are the captain - you could lose your license
if the situation warranted.

Hi Curtis,
Are you talking about replacing just the windows in the aluminum frames on
your 30-1? I replaced the windows and splines on my 1975 30-1 last year
and it was a breeze. I actually was able to use the same windows as they
cleaned up very nicely with a plastic polish. It would have bee
Howdy all,
I installed the sound exciters on my 30 MK1 after watching Ted's video. In
a word, fantastic. They sound great and they are totally protected under
the cockpit. No drilling or cutting needed and cheap to boot. They attach
with double stick tape rings - I plan on working up a better
During a race last week one of my crew tried to muscle in the genoa furler
while it was fouled in the spin halyard. Pow went the feeder extrusion. I
purchased a repair kit from Rig Rite for $300 clams (ouch). Then during the
'repair' I busted off the forestay in the main bearing (double ouch).
Hi Rick,
I replaced the seals on my 1975 30 MK1 last year. It was an absolute
breeze. Got the parts from South shore yachts - just measure and order.
Take out the old gaskets and clean the aluminum frames. If your windows are
shot (mine were fine) just use the old windows to as a template for t
