It can also be the mast making the noise. Haul a line up on the halyard and
wrap it around the mast in a few places. It helps on our boat when we have
some howling.

When I climbed onboard last nite, I heard the distinctive sound of a diaphragm
pump running, except that I don’t have an automatic one. I checked the
backstay, which usually sounds like a low resonant hum, but it was quiet. Put
my ear on the boom, and it was loud! The
Dave; we had a Venture 25, and had the same experience with the centerboard
cable; likewise we would "sing along" when the cable began to hum...I like the
Pachebel reference, very apt!
