I guess I should correct this! but auto will only help if you have an auto
pilot connected to your quadrant not the wheel! Len

John, that looks like great leverage. I applaud you for testing it before you
need it. Every C&C will be a little different. Mine is short and almost
impossible to use in moderate wind without a winch. It’s worth trying before
shit happens. Auto helm is your friend if something goes bad FYI. Len
John, thanks very much. From your pics, that’s just my set up. So you can
get full steerage from that angle—no conflict with wheel?

Hi Peter,
On My 37 the access plate just under helm seat is remover and a long pole with
square base is inserted into matching female square top of the rudder post. The
pole only fits/aims sideways ( toward engine control panel) and you actually
steer from there.
After reading about this topic
I have needed our emergency tiller in a squall before. Long story short, try it
before you need it. Some boats need the wheel removed and some need you to use
the primary winches. Spare steering cables are gold in a remote area. Len

Trying to understand how the emergency tiller works on my 37. As others have
noted on their 35II, the access aft of the pedestal is less than ideal, if not
dangerous. Any workarounds or mods I should consider?

Ditto on Zepherwerks.
He replaced my sheaves and axles. I sent him my old ones which were original,
veed for wire and he sent them back with new sheaves rounded for rope halyards.
IIRC, He's on the west coast and it took two weeks, winter project.

The deck felt solid, so I doubt it was bad balsa. The issue is my boat needs
the deck painted, so my wife would hit me with a boat pole if I bought ANOTHER
boat and then had to get the deck painted. The only thing the boat needed right
away was an autopilot, SSB, and AIS, it had a VHF, plotter,
Do you think it was from too thick of gel coat, or bad balsa?
It also looked like you would have had a lot of bucks in electronics upgrading.

Nothing wrong with those sheaves, and the price isn't terrible, as they seem
of good quality.
Only reason I struck out by myself, is I wanted less friction, so mine were
packed with two rows of SS Ball Bearings. That's back when I used to pull
the main up by hand, and it got old.

The 40 is selling for $45K. The hull is gorgeous white Awlgrip. But the deck is
original with more crazing in more places than I think I have seen in a long
time.
