My advice would be to try the emergency tiller before you need it on a calm day
because when you actually need it, it’s never calm and you never have the time
to experiment with it. And a wire halyard will work as a replacement steering
cable if you are sailing in a remote area. Don’t ask me how
I have problems backing out of my slip into a very narrow fairway. I have a bow
in Port tie. Backing out I have to pull forward past my slip, back into my slip
using the port prop walk. Then pull out forward. Find it is much easier to just
back in to begin with. Luckily I have a bunch of boat ho
FWIW, just watched a video of old tiller steered gaff pilot cutters. The boats
are around 50ft and were steered by placing a line around the end of the tiller
and holding the line like a purchase instead of the tiller itself. This allows
the helmsman to sit or stand nearer the rail, where he has
The original problem reported was the Newport 41's stern wants to go to
starboard when the skipper wants it to go to Port.
If the prop is indeed Right Handed, the stern should walk to port when you give
it a short burst of throttle in reverse. Curious why that is not happening for
you. Is the pr
Years ago, the tiller connector on my previous boat broke while returning
to the slip. I locked a big pair of Vise Grip pliers on the rudder post
and managed to get the boat in the slip.

On many boats the emergency tiller is somewhat awkward.
The only experience I have with using one was on a 45 ft. yawl (when the
steering cable broke off-shore). To make it worse, the tiller had to be fitted
athwartship (sideways), so the steering was quite unnatural. It was hard enough

I have actually used mine. Wheel had to come off. Dead ahead was 45? angle.
Was fun backing into a slip. Had to use hip to make it move at times. That
was was one of those times when you appreciate your autopilot is directly
related connected to quadrant.
