FWIW, just watched a video of old tiller steered gaff pilot cutters. The boats 
are around 50ft and were steered by placing a line around the end of the tiller 
and holding the line like a purchase instead of the tiller itself. This allows 
the helmsman to sit or stand nearer the rail, where he has a better view. If I 
needed to use my emergency tiller for any length of time, I'd rig a handy billy.
