I support all the recommendations to disassemble it first.
By the way, when I disassembled it, this simple pump taught an history lesson.
It is a British made Whale Gusher, a very good pump. My only problem was the
nut, totally eaten out by corrosion. Simple, I'll find another nut. Well, the
nut
Sorry - neither time nor finances permit me to participate this year. Crewed
on a J/109 during Race Week a few years ago - awesome close racing
Hope you get the 6 boats.

I found the situation this spring in my pump just as Dennis described.
Inside the Whale pump the internal threads for the screws holding the
flapper in place were eaten away, making the pump junk. I replaced it
with a Whale Mk 5 plastic pump, for about the half the price as the
die-cast Whale
Ron,
You're probably right, chances are it's a Whale Gusher Titan underdeck
mount (BP4410). If it's an alloy version, I'd dis-assemble it before
buying any parts. You may find the sealing surfaces are pitted. If so, it
can't be repaired and work reliably.
I've been down this road before. This
On my 30-1 (1980), it is a Gusher. But, when I took it apart I couldn't get one
of the flaps out - totally frozen in place. Impact screwdriver, heat,
chemicals, leverage, no go. So, I replaced it. Not cheap, but you only have to
buy the main portion, not the cover or handle. I got mine from West
Greg, I made up a couple of pieces of aluminium (carpet edge?) that worked
well for a couple of seasons, but now allows slides to come out under
pressure and not go back in without unscrewing the whole thing. I'm going
to either add stiffening to stop the center bowing out, or tap another
fastener
Defender Marine has rebuild kits for several Whale Gusher models - don't
know what our model is (been going to look one of these years) or what fits.

I thought my cockpit manual bilge pump was a Whale Gusher until I
removed it from the boat and took a better look at it. British made
Henderson Mark 5. Whale Pumps now owns the design and supplied me with a
rebuild kit about 7 or 8 years ago.

Ron. Definitely take the pump apart first. Might be an easy fix. You can get
parts for it at Jamestown Distributors if you need them.

Ron : there is a simple fix to it. There are two flaps in the pump and you have
debris in one of the flaps , take apart the pump and look at that first

On the subject of bilge pumps, mine is not working. It's the original pump
located on the cockpit floor. I suspect the diaphram is ruptured.
I'm an hour from the boat and freezing; I believe it's a Whale gusher???
Any idea where parts can be found?

Hey everyone, thanks very much for the replys! I was away for the past few days
and just going through them now. I did actually go to Rod's and they have a $65
minimum and that's where I ended before posting here. I bought a little piece
of stainless to try and fabricate one. I don't think it
