If it's paint, oven cleaner works well. Nothing like a shot of dilute
hydrochloric acid to move stuff around.

Just a hint, if you use a 3M wheel, make sure the drill is turning the correct
direction! I made it through half of one letter and the wheel unscrewed itself
and of course fell overboard. I removed the rest of the name with a plastic
scraper and a heat gun.

Steve, These guys won't tell you, but there is no Neptune checking you out. It's a trick, god (small g) is dead, so are the rest of his buddies.Keep this between ourselves. Those guys farther south still think there's hope .Drink the rum yourself! Sam :-)
Don't forget, for the re-naming to be successful, you have to remove
EVERYTHING that has the old name on it (life vests, etc.). Failure to
remove ALL occurrences of the old name and you might as well just run her
aground.

A trawler - or any powerboat - is probably less likely to go far from home
than a sailboat given the costs involved. But the security of a mortgage
assumes the asset ( boat) is tied at the dock and will be easy to seize and
re-sell in the event of default. I wouldn't be so sure that is the case.

The point I was trying to make had nothing to do with one's ability to
repay the loan and having a 'for sale' sign on your lawn. It was how to
finance an old boat that a chartered lender might not want to do
directly. If someone can't make the payments, it doesn't really matter

Nice idea...
I'm not sure how that works in the US, but in Canada, I believe the
boat needs to be federally registered (as opposed to licensed) in
order to register a mortgage against it.

Yep. Although if you get behind a few payments, the bank will put a
'for sale' sign on your lawn, not on your boat. Especially in Canada
where the banks' ability to enforce is much greater than it is in the
US.
If you're comfortable with that risk, go for it. If you're not, then
think twice.

I simple solution to purchasing an older boat, if your chartered lender
won't finance it, is to obtain a "line of credit".most financial
institutions offer them.some are secured and some are unsecured.
Naturally the 'secured' ones should have a lower interest rate.
