Too bad it can't do the same on the desktop. For example, I just bought a new
system with a Gigabyte motherboard and
I am pretty picky about sound, so even under Windows I was not happy with
the onboard audio. I have a couple of these:

They work out of the box with most of the Linux distros I have tried. For
Windows you still have to install the driver.

you can get one of them external USB sound devices, plug it in, and more
likely than not, you will get better sound than your built in (card) could
ever produce.
