I am having a bit of the problem (actually there were two. One, seems to be
solved)...
I had a ASUS E35M1-M PRO mobo-based server w/8GB RAM and two NIC cards (the
onboard NIC and a D-LINK DGE-530T REV C1, later replaced by an INTEL
PRO/1000 GT DESKTOP).

As to your lan card speed issue, I am guessing it might be related to
not using the latest firmware drivers.

I used both linux-firmware & linux-firmware-nonfree from the trusty
repository...wouldn't that be enough?
