As to your lan card speed issue, I am guessing it might be related to
not using the latest firmware drivers. 
For instance:
You need non-free
/etc/apt/sources.list
Line:

deb http://mirror.peer1.net/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free

Note: picking a good server like peer1 depends on your ISP's backbone
route (your mileage may vary)

Search for firmware and install driver for YOUR card.

ie
firmware-realtek - Binary firmware for Realtek wired and wireless
network adapter
firmware-intelwimax - Binary firmware for Intel WiMAX
Connection                      
firmware-ipw2x00 - Binary firmware for Intel Pro Wireless 2100, 2200 and
2915      
firmware-iwlwifi - Binary firmware for Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 and
802.11n cards
