Thanks for your help. I deleted all the copies of .parentlock and lock I could find. That didn't help so I deleted all the mozilla directories (there was more than one in my user space) and completely uninstalled iceweasel. Then I reinstalled iceweasel and it seems to work ok. Robin On Wed, S
