[clug-talk] Andrew Tridgell on Patent Defence

2010-03-23 Thread Shawn
http://news.swpat.org/2010/03/transcript-tridgell-patents/ An interesting read. I learned more about patents in the 30 minutes or so it took to read through this, than I have ever from reading slashdot or hearing things through the grapevine. (admittedly though, I've never had much cause to

Guys, I just saw a comment on lwn.net. The author was talking about a function specific to okular (a KDE application) and one of the people posting a comment said "If KDE wants to survive in a GNOME world they better stop making fool decisions." What I wonder is this. Is Gnome the majority that

I'm all KDE and have been since almost the beginning of it. I tried Gnome once or twice and found it exceedingly awkward. On March 23, 2010 07:46:59 pm : robert-william : lewko wrote: > Guys, I just saw a comment on lwn.net. The author was talking about a > function specific to okular (a KDE app

As an ex-windows user, I found Gnome fairly straightforward, and since I use it, I recommend it to those I set up so I can help them easily via GUI (I'm not very good in terminal!) The only other desktop my linux-using-friends use is XFCE. I don't think I know anyone personally who uses KDE. JME. C

I use Gnome because I found KDE a bit too busy, as in I found it hard to find anything in the menus. I know I can customize all that stuff, but why take the time to do that when most GNOME schemes don't need it? I don't particularly like GNOME but it doesn't get in my way most of the time. I su

Hello Kin Wong, When I payed for my two tiered membership you said that you would mail it to me, so I showed you my ID card to get my new address correct. I have been waiting quite a while for my card and it has not arrived in the mail. Please check to see that you sent it to the correct address

Hello. I suspect that Gnome would win because that is what gets installed on most corporate desktops. I've been in a few of Calgary's larger head offices and any place that is using LINUX seems to be using Gnome. If the GG&E department of even a mid size oil company goes this route that rapidly

My feeling is that Gnome might, in fact, be more popular these days thanks to the popularity of Ubuntu (as Ian said). I also agree that a few years ago, the majority of Cluggers were using KDE, but now that Aaron moved to Vancouver, it is finally safe to admit your secret Gnome fetishes. Personall

I personally think the question is skewed much the same way as asking if someone prefers "Ford" or "Chevy". Or "North American" vehicles vs "Imported" vehicles. In a lot of cases, the choice is not the user's to make - it is whatever they can get (i.e. what comes with the distro they are runn
