Ubuntu and Debian here. I have been happy with both on everything from
really slow 500Mhz geode processors all the way up to many core monster
workstations.

You do not in fact need a "gaming" machine to run any of the main f
have the mint machine and two windows xp cause I need the apps on them and
one machine that changes use it to experiment mostly had fedora on
it last-guess still does

tried fedora - didnt mind it hated ubuntu and found debian also
ignored my settings - wouldn't turn off the way I wanted ...hate that

:) Was the Debian running Gnome or KDE? You could look at Crunchbang or
running Debian with a lighter DE.
I see a lot of people in the group use mint.
