Ubuntu and Debian here. I have been happy with both on everything from really slow 500Mhz geode processors all the way up to many core monster workstations.
I am sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience with Debian. You do not in fact need a "gaming" machine to run any of the main flavours of Linux, particularly Debian so I suspect there may have needed to be some configuration. Glad you found something that works for you. These days there is no perceptible performance difference between my laptop (dual core CPU, Intel iGPU) and my two main workstations for day to day tasks. The only time I really notice the difference is when I am doing something compute intensive or in fact playing a game. Computers today are extremely powerful, with most of us not really stressing the hardware. These are amazing times we live in. Let me end by joining my peers in welcoming you to CLUG.
