Mixing versions is the road to madness. All components should at least be
at the *same* version.
The version(s) in Etch / stable are old and do have problems, by upgrading
all components to the versions in volatile, you should see a lot few

we are running several Debian GNU/Linux (Etch) boxes as mail gateways for our
clients. On at least two of those boxes we have frequent problems with
clamav-daemon. In one case clamav-daemon is being used by amavisd-new in the
other case we use a smtp-proxy called "clamsmtp".

I'm using clamav-deamon with freshclam to scan incoming
emails on my mail-server*
After the last clamav-update in debian etch, clamav stops
working sometimes after freshclam updated the signatures.
