I gave up on the ppa, obsolete depenency issues and flatpak and just use
the Windows version which only requires WINE which I already had installed.

I'm running Linux Mint 20 and decided to try the flatpak version of

I downloaded and installed the .flatpak file from

but when I ran Chirp it showed the version as 20200807 and said there is

In addition to that the UV2D (and UV3D, UVD1P and some other models) are
not capable of being programmed for 2.5 kHz steps/7.5 kHz spaced
channels that are used on VHF by many Part 90 licensee and they may not
even be narrowband compliant (I don't remember).

Yep. It's useless for my area too but that could change so I added it to

Wrong. You don't know what WINE is.

That will not work with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa because Ubuntu
dropped Python2 and CHIRP requires it.
Right now the only easy way to run CHIRP on Ubuntu 20.04 is installing
WINE and then using the Windows version of CHIRP.

GMRS allows removable/external antennas. FRS does not.
FCC Part 95 certification for GMRS, FRS and MURS radios includes far
more than just the antenna type and transmit power.

Sorry, That was a typo. Python 2 is discontinued.
I read something about Fedora dropping Python 2 also.
Is CHIRP dead now as far as Linux development?

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS will be released in a few days. I installed the beta
version of Xubuntu to see how it works.
Ubuntu has dropped Python 3 and the old repo version of CHIRP.
The chirp-daily Linux tarball will no longer run locally because of
Python 2 no longer being available. A lot of people using
Also the OP did not specify if he was using CTCSS or DCS decode.
Tone decoding on Baofeng radios can be flakey.
Sometimes they can take seconds to decode and the receive audio may not
unmute immediately. They can also falsely mute the receive audio.

I tried CHIRP on the FT-7800R with no problems and nothing broke but I
can't use CHIRP because it doesn't support split tone mode and the
developers aren't interested in adding it.
Years ago when I bought the radios I bought FTB7800 programming software

They changed the RF chip at least once. That could be one reason.
It could be the default settings changed in different firmware versions.

Am I correct in assuming the blob is only used by CHIRP and not uploaded

This isn't as bad as I thought. I can upload the old factory image to
the radio with the current version of CHIRP and then when I select UV-82
to download the image at least CHIRP doesn't complain about the r

Chirp DTCS is the same as Motorola DPL (or DCS). (Digtal Coded Squelch).
Chirp DTCS Pol colum is Polarity; N is normal and I is inverted.
Always use NN (transmit normal receive normal) unless you have problems
then you might have to change it.

HN5RV01 would be the real firmware version.
All radios made after about 2012 show BFB298 even though they really
have other versions.
Somebody will have to correct me but I think all UV-5R style 7 or 8 W
three power level radios have to use BF-F8HP Chirp radio model.
