I suspect you typed " TO " (space, T, O, space) rather than using the TO
keyboard (shift-4). As the manual puts it, "You must remember that it is
useless trying to spell

All keywords on the ZX81 have to be single keypress-type words - not typed out.
The “TO” in your FOR loop is typed by pressing Shift-4. Don’t type “T” “O” or
you will get a syntax error.
