I thought this sort of thing was what the various target-mode SCSI
frameworks were designed for? I seem to remember at least one of them
had emulated tape drives backed by files.

The SCSI2SD is the only one whioch I didn't try, now the newer version
is out, and should even be faster. But didn't have the time to try.
