I ran the trace in the bug description through decode_stacktrace.sh,
which seems to provide a good hint for what's happening. The null
pointer dereference occurs when trying to access dev->init_name in
function dev_name of include/linux/device.h, which is called while
triggering the wbt_timer trace
I wasn't able to reproduce the issue following the instructions in #4. I
gave it 5 tries and didn't see a panic, but I was able to produce an
identical trace on blanka with the following:
# echo 1 > /sys/kernel/tracing/wbt/enable
# echo 1 > /sys/kernel/tracing/tracing_on
# cat /sys/kernel/tracing/
According to the kernel team this still happens with jammy 5.15 and noble 6.8.
Looks like this also happens with upstream LTP.
