True, there is a useless \notes there. If that confuses you, then just remove
\notes from there

The following two scores generate different output using 2.1.16.

songB = \notes \relative c'' { a16 a8 a }

Using debian testing & pedro's 2.1.16 package, I made lilypond crash.
This was while trying to isolate a bug that I first found:
In a piece whose score contained:
<<
\context Voice=A { \songA \songB }
\lyricsto A \context Lyrics {\lyrA }
>>
lyricsto didn't put any syllables under songB's firs
Just built 2.1.16 for Cygwin.
I get very strange beams. Please see the attached image.
Could you help me where the problem is?
