Since early October, a small number of Greater Snow Geese (up to 1500) have
shown up in fields southeast of Casselman which is about 25 minutes east of
Ottawa. Today I spotted a flock of about 2500 a few km west of Moose Creek
along Cty Rd 6 with a larger number showing up on the traditional gather
Eight participants today were not disappointed. We saw 32 species,
including our target birds, *Snow Geese* and had a few surprises along the
way. We started on Lafleche Rd on the extensive sod farm but did not have
any geese on the ground. Less than a thousand flew by in several flocks

With a less than satisfying season it was good to hear that thousands
(unknown number) have been seen east of Lancaster in two areas. Birds have
been on the water as well as in fields at Westley's Point which is about 5
km east of South Lancaster on the South Service Rd. (the road begins at

There are still a large number (20-30,000) in the area of Russell and
Embrun. Areas to check are around the sewage lagoons of both towns (the
lagoons themselves are off limits). Also check the
Russell storm pond and west of Morwood. There are also a few thousand at
the Winchester lagoons, both in t
Activity has been a little behind schedule but there is finally some
movement. Even the Canadas were slower to make a major appearance. In the
past week only a few very small flocks of Greater Snow Geese have been
reported between South Lancaster and Morrisburg along the St. Lawrence or
close by.
I have had reports of a good number of Snow Geese in the Winchester area,
notably along Cty Rd 43 south of town. The exact location can change day to
day as fields open up. Later, when the lagoons open up, this area will be a
significant attraction because the birds will not need to retreat to the
As anticipated, the dam finally broke in the east for Greater Snow Geese
yesterday with a large flock gathering east of Lancaster. There was a
report of 30-50,000 first in the fields east of town near Bainsville then
breaking up into smaller flocks and dispersing. The birds likely

A Pink-footed Goose was seen yesterday afternoon with Snow and Canada Geese
at Westleys Point by Daniel Lafortune. There is a small flooded cornfield
adjacent to the river at the bottom of 2nd line Rd. I did not see it this
morning but there were only Canadas, ducks and one Snow Goose. If it is

With snow gone and the final ice disappearing from lagoons, geese have
moved further north for the most part. The best chance for seeing flocks is
on the sod farm at Lafleche Rd, 5 km east of Casselman off Hwy 417. Exit at
Hwy 138, the exit for Cornwall. There were between 5-10,000 there this

I have been keeping an eye on activity and the weather for several weeks,
focusing on what's forecast for northern areas. While we are enjoying
mid-summer conditions now and for the immediate future, conditions much
further north have suggested that some Snow Geese may move south earlier
than we ha
We have not seen any locations with large numbers, 25-50,000, but there are
several with 1-4,000 birds. The go to area in years past was the sod farm
adjacent to the Lafleche landfill on Lafleche Rd off Hwy 138 east of
Casselman. I had about 2300 there the other day, most far from the highway.

I travelled both north and west of Cornwall with mixed results. I had no
geese along Hwy 138 at the sod farm, near the lagoons at Moose Creek or in
the fields north of the 417 towards St. Isidore. Along Route 400 at Embrun
near the lagoons there were about 2300 in the air moving in every direction
While on Wolfe Island at Kingston Jan. 21 I encountered a flock of 13
Horned Larks. All were Prairie migrants, not overwintering Northerns which
have been with us since the fall. This is the earliest I have ever had
migrant Horned Larks in Eastern Ontario, with mid-February when I would

I got a report today of 1000 Snow Geese on Flagg Rd west of Morrisburg. I'm
not sure exactly where. This is a full month ahead of expected early
arrivals. Given the temperatures of recent days that's not entirely
surprising. Things may slow down next week.

While I have yet to spot my first, a few observers have seen small flocks,
mainly from Morrisburg east. Check Lakeshore Drive west of Morrisburg until
it ends at Cty Rd #2. Then go west to check the area at Iroquois. A flock

There are pockets of Snow Geese being reported in several locations, so far
between Hwy 417 and the St. Lawrence River. There are no major
concentrations at this time. There is no snow left so birds are free to
feed in any cornfield which makes finding feeding locations harder. It is a

A few decent-sized flocks of a few thousand showed up in late February but
it seemed that we still had more to come. That took place yesterday when
migrating flocks appeared over Cornwall heading east, very close to the
normal arrival date of the main movement. Today there were 20,000 off

We are well into this spring's activity whereas in most years we would just
be starting. Birders are looking for reliable locations and at this time
there are at least two. The first is at Westley's Point east of South
Lancaster on South Service Rd. On Thursday morning there were about 15,000

Birding visitors to the Seaway will appreciate knowing that sometime during
the day on Friday (tomorrow) the Long Sault Parkway between Long Sault and
Ingleside will be opening. The water level on the river is at its maximum
so there will be no shallows to attract shoreline species.

*Snow Geese- *This is an update on several news items. As expected, based
on the arrival schedule of Snow Goose flocks in the east in the last few
years, the first good showing was in recent days in the general Casselman
area (no details). Flocks used to appear anytime usually after mid-October

In the past week reports have come in about flocks in four areas. None are
very large, a few thousand for each sighting but still worth checking.

This has been a frustrating spring but there are geese around. I have had a
flock of 20,000+ at Green Valley along Cty Rd 34 10 minutes north of
Lancaster. The birds were not near the road but were further east in the
floodplain near farms. Sometimes they may be at the lagoons a little

In the past week I have seen Snow Geese in the Winchester area. Yesterday I
had a flock of about 3000 south of Winchester Springs in a field on the
west side of Hwy 31. It was about 7:15 a.m. The birds may have overnighted
there because I had seen a much larger flock in the exact spot a week

We are in the early days of waterfowl migration with both Canada and Snow
Geese beginning to move. Today there was a report of up to 10,000 Snows
migrating high downriver over Cornwall. There is currently open water from
Iroquois west but there is none available on the Ontario side further east.
