There is currently a Mew Gull at the Essex-Windsor Regional Landfill.
It is in the fields south of the landfill and easiest seen from McCormick side
road about 200m south of County rd 18.
The Essex Landfill is south of the town of Essex on County Road 18 between
McCormick Road and Coulter Sid

With todays warm temperatures there was a big increase in the number of Crows.
A pair of very vocal Merlins most likely the local breeding pair arrived
today. This warm weather also brought in the first of the year Herring gulls.
There is approx. 90 to 120 cm of snow on the ground at present in

Red Wings and America Robins. It's about time :<)!

The highlight of the week was 2 (!) BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, which were
seen briefly north of the Dewberry Trail on the 9th, but
Sorry for another email, but this is a pretty serious rarity in Ontario and a
bunch of birders did not get to see it this afternoon. Since my last email the
Mew Gull has flown out of sight with most of the Ring-billed Gulls it was with.
It is also now pretty dark out so they likely went to roost
There were a few more signs of eventual spring this week. Temperatures were
above freezing for at least part of most days. The average snow depth compacted
and melted down to 80 cm from the 83 cm here three weeks ago (whoopee!). Crows
are becoming widespread. Ravens were seen carrying nest mater
