An
le time event (require is
runtime) so I was thinking it wouldn't be scoped that way but it does
appear that it stays in scope so you don't need belts and a suspender,
er, the 'no bytes' un-pragma.

irement your RE looks for is
the single blank between capture 1 and 2 - so
Kia\tVenga
won't work. Actually anything w/o a blank will fail ... don't really
know enough about your data but try maybe:
if ($model=~/(\S+)\s+(.*)\s*$/) {

Well, I was thinking if it's a multi-word second match:
v6 Austin Martin
Then that would matches
template, some copy)
w/ the data.
Note, you really want to look at verifying your opens:
open my $fh1, '<', $template_file or die "can't open $template_file: $!";
as this would also be troublesome for your code flow and it's just a good idea.

r failure using their return values.
I understand what you're saying, I thought it was to cover the fact
that open return value wasn't being checked? Same as if I'd rewritten
that to be
open my $fh_to_string, '<', \$buffer
or die "can't unbuffer string: $!&

-valid chars, do you care?
if ( $q1_elaborate =~ s/[^[:alpha:]'\s.-]//g ) {
# if appropriate
warn("Non-valid chars in q1_elaborate\n");
}
$q1_elaborate = quotemeta($q1_elaborate);
Again, not a big gain here, but as a rule of thumb - doing your
match/subst in an if or if/el
ax for some kind of
multitasking/fork/parallel (POE, AnyEvent, Coro, Padre::TaskManager
etc.) module - were there any 'use' or 'require' statements in the
original code?
