Dear ALSA user,
I am trying to develop some software to use for a custom sound-masking
system where I live (to e.g. mask the sound of construction beeping
going on outside). It is crucial to have more than two speakers,
because if you can tell where the noise is coming from then it becomes

Hello ALSA users,
I'm trying to figure out how to delete unused volume controls which
had appeared in previous versions of my .asoundrc.
Can this be done without rebooting my computer? When I google the
problem I only find a solution requiring rebooting:

Thank you Clemens. That worked for me.

I wasn't sure which driver you meant, for me it ended up being
something like this:
sudo rmmod snd_hda_intel snd_usb_audio snd_hda_codec_
Dear Mark (cc'ing ALSA-user, ALSA-devel)
Thank you for your tutorial

I found it helpful and clearly-written (although missing a "}" brace

Could you retest with the latest? I tried to fix the avail_min issue here:

Dear ALSA,
I'm not really having a great deal of luck getting responses from ALSA
developers here, but I figured I'd try again just for the sake of
documenting the various bugs that I've been running into. I guess most
people have moved to Pulseaudio and that is why ALSA development has
petered o
Yeah it seems pretty dead here. I got one or two replies but no follow-up.
Maybe try the devel list Linux-ALSA ?

You probably want to send this to the ALSA developer list, this one is

Trial and error didnt make it aswell, as there is no error reporting
of Alsa if anything is wrong.
ALSA needs better error reporting, that's for sure.
Have you heard of Ecasound? I find it very hard to understand, but it
may do what you want with the mixing of various channels.

This list doesn't get read, you probably want to resend to:
alsa-de...@alsa-project.org
Also, maybe use a mail reader that will let you send plain text without changing it (e.g.
"-C-D" is not an option)

Usually USB audio devices are detected by the kernel and appear as ALSA
devices. You can get a list of your devices with `aplay -l` or `arecord -l`, or
look in /proc/asound/.

I don't know about spotify or mpd, so I'm not sure if I'm understanding the
question correctly, but with Pulseaudio you can monitor output sinks, for
example:

now the problem is that the sound is skipping.
Can you provide a recording of what it sounds like?
In alsa-lib there is an example test/latency.c which just moves samples from
one device to another.
When I run it, the sound that comes out of my speakers is what I would call
"scratchy".

Dear tuxic,
I want to record the audio of a live stream video (youtube).
This sounds like more of a problem for ffmpeg, mpv or youtube-dl.
Everything I tried resulted in audio files with constant or
intermitted sine wave like sounds.
What have you tried? With Pulseaudio, you get "monitor"
