I have a ASUS W1N notebook with these devices:

I installed kernel version 2.6.5, alsa-lib-1.0.4 and alsa-utils-1.0.4.
ALSA starts without any error, but I can only hear something when I plug
headphones into the first headphones port. Under Windows I can choose
between three profiles: headphones only, 2 speakers and surround (using
speakers and second headphones output). I guess the device is in the first
mode, but I can't change it using alsamixer. My asound.state is attached
to this mail.
I also can't change the volume of the headphones output. I can only mute
it by either muting "PCM" or unmuting "IEC958 Capture Monitor". Strangely
"PCM" is a simple switch, not a throttle.
