The "PCM Capt" control in alsa is equivalent to the "Digital Gain" control in OS X, and
the "Mic" control in alsa is equivalent to the "Preamplifier gain" control in OS X.
The monitoring level does'nt affect the record.

Besides modules.conf, where can I load or configure mpu401. I've tried
mpu_port=0x330, mpu_port=0x300 and mpu_port=0 but nothing changes.
mpu401 continues to try to load on port 330. Even removing mpu401 from
modules.conf has no effect. Where else can I look for it being loaded?

Is there a way in ALSA to select the sound output of a program with an
environment variable instead of command line option, like the $DISPLAY
variable for graphics ?

These specify the numbers as you would use in a hw:x,y device name.

Yes, of course: "scummvm -e adlib". scummvm then doesn't use any midi
at all, but directly plays the internally generated sounds. It cannot
do this using the ALSA interf

I upgraded my hardware a while back. My new system has an integrated sound
card. The card was not supported by the version of ALSA that came with my
SuSe 8.2 system, so I was using my old Yamaha soundcard, which worked fine,
