Hello Greg,
Can you try running alsaconf to configure you system for ALSA?
It does a few things including cleaning up the file /etc/modules.conf.
Make sure the following lines are commented out in it:
alias sound-slot-0 via82cxxx_audio
post-install
pre-remove
Reboot your Linux.

I removed that module.. and tried %modprobe
snd-via82xx again... That produced the same error.
Do I have to backup a few more steps after I remove
the old module?
Also, I had already uncommented that module in
modules.conf. Is that going to cause the "modprobe
-r" problems?

I think you need to remove the built-in driver before loading the ALSA.
It's via82cxxx_audio. In my system I had to do
modprobe -r via82cxxx_audio.
