Did you hear anything with OSS, before you tried alsa? Or can you now hear
any sound from OSS applications now?
Can you test Knoppix or SuSE live-eval if they produce sound? I just want
to rule out some pos

Hear anything?
Aplay should report the rate/bit depth of the wav file. If it reports
errors or doesn't report anything, problems ahead.
