Alsa from source will likely install to:
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/sound/
Which means you likely have two versions:
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/ubuntu/sound/
find /lib/modules/

I discovered that my soundcore.ko file was missing. I followed the steps
at the end, and it showed up again. I then ran make install of the
alsa-drivers source, and sound

Another short idea, though perhaps not too helpful taken by itself: Your
problem with the new ALSA seems to be a depencence problem. It looks like your
