Timidity is a software (CPU wasting) synth that synths audio (say wav) from midi information. That audio information can be played by any Wav device so its sound level is controlled by pcm/wav controls. Mainly, kmidi is a kde frontend to timidity. On the other side, kmid uses any of the available
