Like 2.6.0-test5 isn't universal? The ALSA drivers in that kernel are supreme. Just
goto kernel.org and ... oh... we are talking noobs aren't we?

That's all fine and dandy - but weren't we talking about somebody with
an ALSA problem who was using Gentoo?

I run Sid (Debian), I run risks, I run 2.6.0-test5, I love every *bit* of
it. (excuse the pun.)

0.9.6 is in beta... :-)

Well no more chipmunks! Thanks Preben.
I've heard scary stories about the 2.6 kernels and corrupting hard disks.
I think Gentoo has an uber development kernel in their portage tree but
that seems a bit much just to elimi
Upgrade to 2.6.0-test5. It works.

Actually, I'd like to liven this thread up a bit. I am not using arts, nor
do I intend to and I have a via 8223 built in card (I also have a M-Audio
Delta 1010 and it's working great, big ups to the ALSA programmers).
But the via card isn't working well at all. I've tried setting the
dxs_support o
I know this thread is dead, but for my problem, later I removed arts and then install
2.6.0-test5 compiled with the ALSA drivers, and slightly modded my .asoundrc to make
this work without any distortion/static/white noice/weird anything.

In XMMS, it shows 2 devices with the ALSA output plugin. If I select the second one
with mmap off, and with the .asoundrc of:
pcm.via82xx {
type hw
card 0
device 1
}
ctl.via82xx {
type hw
card 0
}
I get no static. Is there a way to set all other applications to use the same device
XMMS is
In XMMS, the second device (Which would be nice to use as the primary) runs static
free. This is a VIA 8233 / AC '97 codec sound system.

I think I've tried everything in ALSA to retard static from ALSA, but I always keep
getting it. I was wondering what I should set my driver and .asoundrc to to convert
all sound to 48KHz? 48KHz plays clearly.
